The engineering of the cadre
The primary pillar of Vijay’s success lies in his refusal to treat fan clubs as mere cheering squads for film releases. Since 2009, when he unified scattered local units into the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI), a welfare-oriented organisation, he began a slow and subtle process of politicisation. While other stars used fan clubs for celebrations and social media wars, Vijay redirected this raw energy toward grassroots social work.
By creating blood banks, free tuition centers and disaster relief units, he transformed fans into volunteers. And the volunteers into a strong, well-knit party cadre. This strategy ensured that when TVK was officially launched in 2024, the party did not need to spend years building a village-level presence. The structure was already in place and trusted by the local populace.
The beta test of 2021
A critical turning point in Vijay’s strategy of cadre engineering was the 2021 local body elections. He made the strategic choice to allow VMI members to contest as independent candidates rather than launching a formal party prematurely. The results were a shock to the political establishment, with his supporters winning over 115 seats across the state out of the 169 seats they contested as independents
This wasn’t just a victory of numbers but also a successful beta test of organisational logistics. It proved that fan club leaders could manage polling booths, navigate the complexities of local campaigning and translate screen idolisation into votes. It gave the cadre the confidence that they could defeat seasoned politicians from legacy parties at the ward level.
Over the years, Vijay distanced himself from fans who engaged in toxic social media wars or disruptive behavior, showing that the TVK cadre would be defined by service rather than sycophancy. This discipline was on full display during the 2024 Vikravandi and 2025 Madurai rallies, where hundreds of thousands were mobilised with extreme organisational discipline usually shown by established political parties.
A new template for power
The ultimate triumph of the TVK marks a paradigm shift in how political power is seized in current times. It has proved that systematic cadre management is the single most important variable for political success, surpassing expensive publicity blitzes, high-decibel communication or even the specific hot issues of the day. While rival parties spent billions on consultants and social media influencers to craft narratives, Vijay focused on the the booth-level worker.
In this new template, the fan club serves as a pre-validated, organic infrastructure that requires no traditional recruitment cycle. Because these fans were already emotionally invested in the leader, their transition to political cadre bypassed the ususal long-drawn political process.
By prioritising the structural engineering of his ground organization over the noise of media cycles, Vijay has shown that a silent, well-oiled machine in the villages can consistently overpower a loud, expensive campaign in the cities. TVK has proved that in the battle for power, the quality of the cadre is the factor that matters the most.
