Pune: The state govt on Tuesday approved the proposal to raise a loan of Rs6,000 crore to acquire land for the proposed Purandar airport project.Principal secretary (industries) P Anbalagan told TOI that the state cabinet, in principle, approved raising funds for the proposed airport. He said the special purpose vehicle (SPV) was already in place, with CIDCO holding 51% stake, followed by MIDC and PMRDA with 15% each, and MADC with a 19% share.

The SPV was constituted earlier to execute the greenfield airport project.Anbalagan said, “It was decided to raise around Rs6,000 crore for the greenfield airport’s land acquisition. While Hudco offered funding of about Rs3,000 crore, the govt is exploring other funding options. We will invite commercial quotes and opt for the most beneficial option.”The cabinet also decided that the loan repayment would be the responsibility of the SPV partners in proportion to their respective shareholding.Pune MP and Union minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the greenfield project would significantly accelerate development in Pune and western Maharashtra. “Enhanced air connectivity will be a game-changer for industry, business, IT sector, tourism and agricultural exports,” he said.Mohol said after the Navi Mumbai international airport, the Purandar airport would emerge as a major alternative for Pune and western Maharashtra, boosting both passenger- and cargo-handling capacity of the region. He said the project would strengthen international connectivity, with potential direct links to key global routes in the Middleeast, Europe and Southeast Asia. “This will open new avenues for exports, foreign investment and global business opportunities,” he said.He said the airport would benefit various sectors, including logistics, warehouse, MSMEs and agriculture, by enabling faster movement of goods and providing farmers with direct access to markets. The project was expected to generate employment, strengthen infrastructure and attract investments, he added.Mohol said the Centre and the state govt would work in close coordination to ensure timely completion of the Purandar airport project.
