MUMBAI: Buffalo milk prices in Mumbai are set to rise from Sept 1, with the wholesale rate increasing by Rs 9 to Rs 102 per litre, Bombay Milk Producers’ Association said.Retail prices are likely to range from Rs 110 to Rs 112 per litre, compared with the current Rs 100 to Rs 104, depending on the area, vendor and supplier. South Mumbai consumers are likely to pay Rs 112, up from Rs 104, while the rate in the rest of Mumbai is expected to rise from Rs 100 to Rs 110.Association office-bearer C K Singh said higher fuel and transportation costs, cattle feed prices, labour expenses and maintenance charges had driven up production costs. He said producing a litre of milk now cost Rs 98, prompting the association to revise its wholesale rate from Rs 93 to Rs 102.The revised rate will remain in effect until Feb 28, 2027, to meet current production costs, the association said. Around 40 lakh litres of buffalo milk is distributed across Mumbai daily. Although the wholesale price increase has been fixed, retail rates vary by location, vendor and supplier. The rise may not be uniform across the city, as prices are usually higher in south Mumbai than in north Mumbai. The hike comes ahead of the festival season, when demand for milk and dairy products typically rises. Bhandup resident Dhanajay Pawar said the increase would disrupt household budgets, although his family preferred tabela milk because of its taste.
