Ahmedabad: A 19-year-old BTech student from a university in Anand died after allegedly jumping from an 11th-floor apartment near Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) in Gandhinagar late on Sunday night.Infocity Police have registered a case of accidental death and are probing the circumstances leading to his death, including the student’s last phone conversation. According to police, the student, Devarsh Dixit, had travelled to Vadodara with his maternal uncle earlier in the day. After returning to Ahmedabad in the evening, he dropped his uncle off at Ghodasar and was expected to head home. Instead, he went to an apartment owned by his father at Vinayak Saral Courtyard in Raysan near PDEU.The apartment had been rented out to an airline pilot, who was away on duty at the time.A preliminary investigation indicated that after reaching the flat, the student had a lengthy phone conversation with a friend. Police said he allegedly placed his mobile phone on the parapet before jumping off. His phone has been seized for forensic examination.Residents and security guards rushed to the spot after hearing a loud thud and alerted police. The student suffered grievous injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His body was later sent for postmortem.Investigators are trying to determine why the student went to the Gandhinagar flat instead of returning to his Ahmedabad residence.Police said statements of the friend with whom the student last spoke on the phone, and other acquaintances, will be recorded. Family members are yet to be questioned in detail as they are occupied with the last rites.“We have registered a case of accidental death. As the matter was reported late in the night, detailed questioning of the residents of the society is still pending. The family’s statements will be recorded after the funeral,” an investigating officer said.
