Patna: The Indian Institute of Technology-Patna (IIT-P) has witnessed a dramatic expansion in academic programmes and student strength, with the number of BTech programmes soaring from just three in 2008 to 32 in 2024, a more than tenfold increase.The institute, which began operations in 2008 with 92 students at the Polytechnic College campus in Patliputra Colony, now has 4,347 students.Its student strength has risen nearly 44-fold since inception, with the sharpest growth recorded in recent years—from 1,621 in 2018 to 4,347 in 2026.The number of programmes has also expanded substantially. From three BTech programmes in 2008, IIT-Patna had five each of BTech and MTech programmes by 2016. By 2020, it was offering nine BTech, six MTech and three MSc programmes. The current portfolio comprises 32 BTech, 15 MTech and three MSc programmes.Registrar A K Thakur attributed the rapid expansion to the completion of Phase-II infrastructure under director T N Singh, supported by systematic expansion of hostels, classrooms, laboratories, messes and sports facilities.The institute has also significantly expanded its faculty base, from 46 faculty members in 2008 to 165 in 2025.IIT-Patna has further strengthened academic-industry linkages through its BTech-BS/MBA dual-degree programme with IIM-Mumbai and IIM-Bodh Gaya.Students complete seven semesters at IIT-Patna and three at the partner IIM, earning a management degree without appearing for CAT.
