On Sunday evening, Brandon Maxwell gathered a very small group of industry folks, and four members of the New York Philharmonic, for one of the most intimate shows of New York Fashion Week. As violins played and sunlight shone through a delicate overhead water feature into the sparse room, the designer’s extremely pared-back Spring 2027 collection — one that “explores Brandon Maxwell anew,” per the show notes, was revealed.

The show felt like the fashion equivalent of a palate cleanser, with Maxwell aiming to strip away any bells and whistles and encapsulate the essence of his brand, or as the show notes put it: “distilling designs to their purest and most desirable form.” The intimate setting was part of this, allowing guests to see the clothes up close and take in the luxurious materials, meticulous tailoring and careful attention to detail. The collection’s overall lack of color, aside from a couple of pops of green and red, also helped put those elements into focus. It felt like Maxwell’s goal was to clarify what his brand stands for.

“This collection is not only the outcome of time; it is the outcome of a fully intentional approach,” Maxwell said in a prepared statement. (The designer declined interviews this season.) “Over the years, there have been ideas, techniques and silhouettes that live at the core of Brandon Maxwell. Looking back, I found recurring connection points to re-visit in new iterations, and this ultimately challenged me to form a clearer understanding of my work.”

It may all sound surprisingly serious coming from Maxwell, but he seems to have just gained a more mature perspective. “The control that I was searching for at a younger age has mellowed,” he added. “The collection represents greater ease and honesty: designs as evidence of what makes sense to me, and what I feel confident sharing with you.”
