Shillong: The 87th meeting of the Brahmaputra Board has been convened in Shillong to discuss initiatives primarily on integrated water resources management, flood and erosion control.Senior officials from the central and state govts of all northeastern states and West Bengal attended the programme held on Tuesday.
“The meeting focused on reviewing ongoing programmes and discussing strategic initiatives related to integrated water resources management, flood and erosion control and institutional strengthening in the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins,” an official statement said.Decisions taken during the 83rd standing committee meeting (held on Jan 30 and Feb 7, 2026) were ratified, and several project proposals were approved.These included “comprehensive assessments of riverbank erosion in the Brahmaputra basin, surveys and investigations of the Jiadhal river in Arunachal Pradesh, DPRs for desilting Baguwa Cherra and constructing a sluice gate in Chandipur RD Block, flood and erosion mitigation at 13 vulnerable sites along the Barak River in Assam, development of a local pond in Imphal East, Swachhata programmes for FY 2026–27, mathematical modelling and DPR preparation for protection measures in Majuli Island, updating the island’s master plan, and landscape development of the Basistha Riverfront in Guwahati”.The board also decided to include three new master plans — Dibang-Disang, Noa-Dihing, and Rangit — bringing the total number of master plans to 76, the statement said. Reaffirming its commitment, the Brahmaputra Board emphasised its support for basin states in achieving sustainable water resource management.The next meeting, the 88th, will be held in Guwahati.
