Dibrugarh: NHIDCL has said the Brahmaputra Express Highway is not part of its mandate.The clarification followed a letter from Udaypur resident Parag Dutta, who approached the Prime Minister’s Office on June 26, 2026, seeking an update on the project.Dutta said former Assam chief minister and current Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the preliminary survey at the DTP dyke on the Brahmaputra bank in Dibrugarh on Jan 24, 2017.The proposed highway was to run along the Brahmaputra bank from Sadiya to Dhubri to improve connectivity, boost tourism and tackle chronic erosion.Dutta said more than nine years passed without visible progress, leaving residents unsure whether the project was shelved. He noted that other projects, including the underwater road-cum-rail tunnel connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh, moved forward while the highway’s status remained unclear.His letter was registered with the PMO on July 3 and forwarded through the CPGRAMS grievance portal.In its July 31 reply, NHIDCL’s Guwahati regional office acknowledged the grievance but said the Brahmaputra Express Highway “is not envisaged” in its mandate.The letter, signed by General Manager Binayak Kumar, did not clarify whether the project was scrapped, renamed or merged with another scheme.
