Bhubaneswar: Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) is set to undergo significant upgrade to strengthen its preparedness against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats.Authorities have outlined plans to develop specialised infrastructure, hire additional manpower, and provide advanced training to ensure effective response in case of emergencies.Airport director Prasanna Pradhan emphasised the critical role of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as the first responder in such scenarios. “Since CISF will be the first responder while coming across any suspicious weapon, they need to be trained. We will augment infrastructure for storing dangerous chemicals upon detection, learn how to handle radiation, and store nuclear-related gadgets that have larger ramifications,” Pradhan said.Currently, BPIA lacks both expertise and facilities to deal with CBRN incidents. This gap has prompted authorities to prioritise capacity building. The plan includes creating secure storage areas for hazardous materials, radiation-handling units, and specialised containment systems for nuclear-related devices.Airport officials said equally important is the role of Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) teams, who would be trained to manage CBRN emergencies after detection.Officials noted that while CISF would initiate the response, ARFF teams must be equipped to handle the aftermath, including containment, evacuation, and mitigation. “The second most important aspect is facing and handling CBRN by ARFF,” Pradhan added, highlighting the need for multi-agency coordination.Experts believe that airports, being high-density public spaces, are particularly vulnerable to unconventional threats. Strengthening BPIA’s response framework would not only enhance passenger safety but also align with international aviation security standards.The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for specialised preparedness in India’s airports. With Bhubaneswar emerging as a key aviation hub in eastern India, the move is expected to set a precedent for other airports across the country.
