Ponda: Pankaj Naik, 41, a resident of Tishem-Borim, was injured by a gunshot while cleaning a firearm at his house on Sunday. He has been undergoing treatment at the GMC.The bullet — a steel ball used in bearings — pierced his left thigh. Ponda police said they seized the 12-bore, single-barrel, country-made gun from Naik’s house and registered an FIR against him under provisions of the BNS and Arms Act for the alleged illegal possession and handling of the firearm, failure to take proper care and precaution, and for endangering the life and personal safety of others by storing it at his home.

Police said that Naik claimed it was his ancestral gun and that the incident occurred at 11pm on Sunday when he was placing the firearm back in its place after cleaning it. “According to Naik, the gun fell to the ground and a bullet was fired automatically,” a police officer said.
