Silchar: The body of a 12-day-old girl was recovered from a well in Uttar Gopalpur village in Sribhumi district on Saturday, prompting police to launch an investigation.The infant, identified as Sushmita Das, was reported missing from her home in the early hours of Saturday.According to police, the baby’s father, Arun Das, said his wife woke up around 3am and claimed that an unidentified woman had taken their daughter away.A police team led by Bazaricherra police station officer-in charge Khanindra Nath reached the village and launched a search operation. The infant’s body was later found in a nearby well. The body was sent to Sribhumi Civil Hospital for autopsy.Police said the infant’s mother gave differing accounts of the incident, including a claim that a supernatural force had taken the child. Investigators said no evidence was found to support the claim.Officials said all angles, including possible foul play, were being examined. The exact cause of death and the sequence of events would be determined on the basis of the post-mortem report, forensic evidence and further investigation, they added.Police have registered a case and said further action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
