Birsa Munda central Jail in Ranchi

Ranchi: The board of visitors inspected the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi on Monday to examine possible cases of caste-based discrimination on the premises. However, the board found no such instances.The board, comprising judicial officers and executives, is in place in every district to identify whether caste-based discrimination is taking place in jail premises and submit report. The team interacted with the prisoners in each of the 60 wards in the jail and enquired whether they were being kept in wards or were assigned works on caste basis.

“During the inspection the team, however, found that the classes of children of women prisoner were not functioning properly and issued direction to jail administration to improve their education system,” DLSA secretary Rakesh Roushan said. There are around one dozen children of women prisoners in the jail.The team also stated that the prisoners aged between 18 and 20 years should be encouraged to spend more time in the jail library. The team also issued direction that the menu of each day must be stuck near the jail kitchen.The team also asked the administration to maintain cleanliness in the jail premises and also provide clean water and food to the prisoners. The members asked the administration to conduct regular health check-ups in the jail so that the prisoners and the children remain healthy.It may be stated here that the visiting BoV comprised of additional judicial commissioner Amit Shekhar, DLSA secretary Rakesh Roushan, sub-divisional police officer Kumar Rajak, jail superintendent Kumar Chandrashekhar and legal aid defense counsel chief Praveen Kumar Srivastava.The Ranchi judicial commissioner AK Mishra, who is chairman of the BoV had visited the jail in this regard on Saturday.
