Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Chanchal Rana on Friday wrote to Census director Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, requesting his permission to proceed with appropriate punishment against 436 teachers, who didn’t turn up for training for the Census exercise.

The teachers data was taken from school and mass education department, and they were personally contacted to join the training that had started from March 19 and will run in phases. The teachers were designated as enumerators and supervisors for Census 2027, BMC officials said.

“They have committed offence under Section 11(1) of the Census Act, 1948. As per Census Rule 1990 (Section 5(3)), action can be taken against the defaulters,” the letter to the Census director read.
