Mumbai: The BMC has directed its water engineering department to resolve complaints of contaminated water supply on top priority amid rising grievances over low pressure and irregular supply in parts of the city.At a special review meeting held on Thursday, top civic officials instructed the department to treat all water-related complaints seriously and ensure time-bound redressal. Civic officials have also been asked to deploy dedicated teams to detect leakages in water pipelines and carry out repairs without delay. The need for immediate site inspections and corrective measures was also stressed wherever complaints of inadequate or low-pressure supply are reported. With multiple road development and infrastructure works underway across Mumbai by the BMC and other authorities, water pipelines often need to be shifted or they risk getting damaged. Dhaval Shah, a Lokandwala resident, reported that a major joint leakage was detected near a water pipeline valve close to the Royal Classic Building. The issue arose while authorities were restoring water supply following diversion work linked to bridge construction at Shastri Nagar. “Water supply has been temporarily suspended due to the leakage, leaving the entire neighbourhoods of Lokandwala, Sundervan, and Shastri Nagar without water,” said Shah.A BMC official said the water engineering department was carrying out diversion of a 750 mm diameter water main at Shastri Nagar bridge. “Owing to this, water supply had to be suspended in SVP Mhada and Lokhandwala zones. Normal supply should resume by Friday night as per schedule, once the work is completed,” said a hydraulic department official. However it’s often seen that initial supply after a water supply cut comes contaminated. Just a week ago, Congress MLA Amin Patel flagged acute water supply issues in South Mumbai, alleging residents in B and E wards are facing severe hardship due to inadequate and low-pressure supply from the Bhandarwada reservoir.
