Varanasi: Banaras Locomotive Works dispatched the 10th unit of a 3,300 horsepower AC–AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique on Saturday, marking the completion of the export order and highlighting the growing international credibility of Indian Railways.According to a BLW spokesperson, the factory has emerged as a global hub for locomotive exports, delivering 182 locomotives to 11 countries, including Tanzania, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Sudan, Angola, Myanmar, Senegal and Mali. The locomotives for Mozambique were exported between June 2025 and Feb 21.Officials said BLW had received an order to manufacture and supply 10 units of 3,300 horsepower AC–AC diesel-electric locomotives for Mozambique, all of which were produced in phases within the stipulated timeline. The development showcases India’s technological capability and industrial strength in locomotive manufacturing. The Cape gauge (1,067 mm) locomotives manufactured by BLW can operate at speeds of up to 100 kmph and are equipped with advanced AC–AC traction technology and modern, ergonomic cab design. tnn
