Food safety officials inspected a Blinkit facility in Mangaluru after a consumer found a worm in an egg

MANGALURU: Food safety officials in Karnataka inspected a Blinkit online retail facility in Mangaluru after a consumer alleged that a worm was found inside an egg purchased through the quick-commerce platform.The complaint was reportedly submitted to Health Minister U T Khader, following which officials inspected the facility operating from Falnir Square in the city’s Falnir area.During the inspection, officials found packets containing broken eggs and directed the facility staff to immediately remove and dispose of the affected stock, according to an official release.As a precautionary measure, the storage room was temporarily closed and sealed to allow thorough cleaning and sanitisation of the food storage area.The Food Safety Department said it would issue a notice to the establishment seeking an explanation over the incident. Further action will be decided based on the inspection findings and the response submitted by the facility management.The inspection comes amid increased scrutiny of food safety and hygiene standards in Karnataka. In a separate action, the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration recently closed and seized a kitchen at Chairman’s Club in Sahakaranagar’s Dollars Colony area of Bengaluru after officials found multiple alleged violations during a special inspection drive conducted on September 3.Officials said around 40 kg of expired chilli was found and seized during the inspection. The department also flagged improper labelling of certain food products, unhygienic conditions in food preparation and storage areas, alleged use or storage of unauthorised artificial colours, lapses in food handling and storage practices, and the storage of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food products together.The department said it would continue inspections and take legal action against food businesses found violating food safety and hygiene norms.
