Palghar: A blast at a steel manufacturing unit in Tarapur MIDC on Monday morning left two workers injured, but a warning alarm that sounded nearly two minutes before the incident helped avert a major tragedy, officials said.The incident occurred around 10.45 am at Viraj Profiles SMS while steel was being melted in a furnace. Around 100 workers were present at the plant at the time. After the alarm went off, most of the workers rushed out of the unit.Crane operator Dharmendra Kumar Ramavadh Sharma (45) could not evacuate in time and suffered burn injuries in the blast. He was rushed to Starlight Hospital in Boisar, where he is undergoing treatment. Sharma has suffered around 10% burns, police said.Another worker suffered minor injuries to his leg. He was provided primary treatment and discharged, Palghar superintendent of police Yatish Deshmukh said.The blast was powerful enough to affect some factories in the vicinity. Authorities are assessing the extent of damage caused to Viraj Profiles and the neighbouring industrial units.Officials from the Palghar division of the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health visited the site and conducted a preliminary inspection. A detailed technical investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the blast.
