Katwa: Anger gripped Katwa town in East Burdwan district on Wednesday morning after a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was found with black cloth tied around its face and hands.The incident took place in the Station Bazaar area. The statue was installed in 1996 by the then Congress-run Katwa Municipality.Police rushed to the spot and removed the black cloth. The incident also triggered strong reactions on social media, with many users condemning the act.Katwa sub-divisional officer Reena Ghosh confirmed the incident, saying CCTV footage from a camera installed above the statue showed a homeless man allegedly tying the black cloth around it at around 12.30 am.Former Katwa MLA Rabindranath Chattopadhyay condemned the incident. He said, “Those who have committed this act are anti-national. I demand that the culprits be identified and given exemplary punishment.”Anil Dutta, vice-president of BJP’s East Burdwan district unit, also condemned the incident. He called it a “heinous act” and urged police to identify the accused and take strict legal action.
