The BJP on Monday urged the Bengaluru City Police not to allow a book reading event in support of activist Umar Khalid, and threatened protests if the organisers go ahead with it.

All Lawyers Association for Justice (ALAJ), People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and Bahutva Karnataka have planned a reading session of the book, Umar Khalid and His Word at Bangalore International Centre in Domlur on Tuesday. Historians Janaki Nair and Ramachandra Guha and actor Prakash Raj are expected to participate in a discussion on the book, to be moderated by PUCL’s Aravind Narrain.

A BJP delegation led by Bangalore Central MP PC Mohan met Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh and gave him a letter.
They are holding the evening because this is a Congress government. We have given the letter that the police cannot allow an event to glorify him. The Congress government should not have allowed it, Mohan told ET.

The residents are also very much concerned. The event will disturb peace. The BJP will hold protests.
