Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday that she is a candidate in all 294 assembly seats in the state and urged people to vote for her without considering who the other candidates are. The Trinamool Congress retaining power is necessary for the benefits of all the welfare schemes implemented by her government to reach the people after the polls, she said.

Banerjee accused the BJP of bringing people from outside Assam to vote in the north-eastern state, as she said the saffron party had doubts about its prospects. From Uttar Pradesh, the BJP took trainloads of people to Assam, she alleged.

Polling for Assam’s 126-member assembly was held Thursday. In Bengal, voting will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29.

Banerjee said the BJP should never be trusted. After an exercise to update the National Register of Citizens in Assam, names of around 1.9 million people were deleted, including 1.3 million Hindus, she said.

“If you want a Trinamool Congress government under my leadership, then I am the candidate in all seats,” Banerjee said, while addressing an election rally at Tentulia in North 24 Parganas district. A snake can be trusted, but not the BJP, she said, in a poll pitch similar to what she had employed in 2021. Once again alleging that migrant workers from West Bengal suffer atrocities in BJP-ruled states, Banerjee said Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot protect West Bengal’s people in other states, but promise a “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal) at rallies.

No agency in the country is impartial under the BJP government at the Centre, as “the saffron party has bought them all”, she alleged.
The chief minister also addressed two more public rallies, including one in Kachari Maidan in the same district. In Bengal, she said, 9 million names had been deleted from electoral rolls during the special intensive revision.

She accused the BJP and the Election Commission of India of making a major police and administrative reshuffle in the state after the announcement of polls.
