Lucknow: Getting a birth or death certificate more than 21 days after the event will soon cost more in Uttar Pradesh, following a state govt decision to raise the delayed registration fee from Rs 20 to Rs 50. The 2.5-fold increase applies only to applications submitted after the 21-day window, while certificates sought within 21 days of a birth or death will continue to be issued free of cost.The revised fee was introduced through a govt order dated June 19. The order was sent to chief medical officer (CMO), who serves as the registrar for birth and death certificates, and was subsequently forwarded to Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) for implementation.Officials said applications received within 21 days are handled at the municipal corporation level. After 21 days, applications are forwarded to CMO office, and certificates are issued only after CMO grants approval.At present, nearly 300 applications for birth and death certificates are pending with CMO office. Several applicants have reportedly been waiting for months due to delays in approvals.Municipal health officer Nand Kishore said govt order has been received and is under examination. He said the revised fee will be implemented after approval from municipal commissioner, and that the new fee is not being charged yet.
