Aizawl: Officials in four Mizoram districts are yet to complete biometric enrolment of 29,577 Myanmar refugees taking shelter in the state, nearly a year after the exercise began under the directives of the ministry of home affairs, state home department officials said on Sunday.The officials said the process remained stalled in the four districts since early July as most district officials were engaged in the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls. As a result, the enrolment has remained stagnant at 98.89% till date.Biometric enrolment of Myanmar refugees has been completed in seven districts — Aizawl, Lunglei, Siaha, Mamit, Khawzawl, Hnahthial and Champhai. Champhai, which borders Myanmar, hosts 12,083 refugees, the largest number in the state.

The biometric enrolment drive began in Mizoram in late July last year.Meanwhile, the biometric enrolment of 1,679 refugees from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts was completed by early July. Enrolment of 235 Bangladesh refugees in Serchhip district, 76 in Lunglei and seven in Aizawl was completed months before, while the process in Lawngtlai district, bordering both Bangladesh and Myanmar, covering 1,361 refugees, was completed a few weeks ago.State home department officials have failed to ascertain whether the biometric enrolment of Myanmar refugees will be completed in the four remaining districts this month.
