Guwahati: Emboldened by a sharp rise in welfare beneficiaries, the BJP in Assam is now targeting a 50% vote share in the upcoming Assembly elections, while notably refraining from projecting a seat tally.

Government schemes are estimated to have benefited over 1.5 crore people in the state, up from around 96 lakh ahead of the 2021 polls.
In 2021, the BJP secured 33.21% of the vote, with allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) at 7.91% and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) at 3.39%. The Congress polled 29.67%, while its then ally AIUDF secured 9.29%. Together, non-NDA parties accounted for about 43.7% of the vote.
The BJP had promised one lakh government jobs in its 2021 manifesto; official data now claims over 1.58 lakh jobs have been provided.

Welfare delivery, particularly targeting women, has emerged as the cornerstone of the party’s electoral strategy. On March 10, the Assam government disbursed ₹9,000 each to nearly 40 lakh beneficiaries under the Orunodoi scheme, amounting to ₹3,600 crore-the largest direct benefit transfer in the state.

The scheme provides ₹1,250 per month to women beneficiaries. The latest transfer included instalments for the first four months of 2026 along with a special payout for Rongali Bihu, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The festival falls in mid-April, when Assembly polls are also expected.

Launched in 2020 during the Covid period with ₹830 per month for 18 lakh women, Orunodoi now covers 40 lakh beneficiaries with an enhanced payout.
The Mahila Udyamita Scheme has also expanded outreach, benefiting over 33.5 lakh women. It offers ₹10,000 as seed capital, followed by ₹25,000 in the second year (shared with banks) and a ₹50,000 performance-based grant in the third year-taking total support to ₹72,500 per beneficiary.
Sarma has cited Bihar as a case study, saying a similar model contributed to the NDA’s electoral success there. He added that the scheme has since been replicated in Bihar under the Centre’s guidance.
“We are seriously contesting around 102 of the 126 seats. We will not talk about seat numbers, but we are targeting 50% vote share,” Sarma said.
This will be the first Assembly election after the 2023 delimitation exercise. Assam has carried out a Special Revision of electoral rolls, with the final NRC yet to be published.

Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel said the electorate stood at 2.49 crore on February 10 and rose to 2.50 crore by March 15, reflecting a net addition of around 64,000 voters.

The BJP came to power in 2016 and currently holds 64 seats in the 126-member Assembly. Among allies, AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL seven and BPF three. However, UPPL is no longer part of the NDA, while BPF has joined it.

In the Opposition, Congress has 26 MLAs, AIUDF 15 and CPI(M) one, along with an Independent member. AIUDF is no longer formally aligned with the Opposition bloc.
