Mumbai: BEST committee member Nitin Nandgaonkar of Shiv Sena (UBT) said he will take up the issue of ‘defective’ buses at the committee meeting on Thursday morning. He referred to earlier complaints submitted to BEST alleging that defective buses were poorly repaired and returned to service without critical technical problems being addressed. “We had furnished evidence regarding alleged poor-quality repairs of defective buses. Following the complaints, an inquiry was ordered. However, there has been no clarity on the outcome of the probe or the action taken based on its findings,” Nandgaonkar told the media on Wednesday. He claimed around 774 buses had recently been found defective. While BEST maintained that they were repaired, Nandgaonkar sought disclosure of repair details, particularly records for brakes, batteries and gear assemblies. tnn“The issue concerns passenger safety. If a bus develops a mechanical fault, catches fire, or meets with an accident, commuters have a right to know whether it has been repaired according to prescribed standards before being allowed back on the road,” Nandgaonkar said. “We want to know whether buses involved in crashes or fire incidents were properly repaired and then put back into service. If these buses were later involved in other accidents, that information should also be made public.”
