US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Ukraine would not exist as a sovereign state without American assistance, including support provided under the Trump administration. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai during his India visit, Rubio praised Ukrainian fighters for bravely defending their country against a larger adversary. He also described US envoy Steve Witkoff’s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as positive. Rubio said proposed ideas would be shared with Russia during Witkoff’s visit to St. Petersburg. He described the negotiations as difficult, highlighting differences over the Donbas region as a central challenge in reaching a settlement.
