Lucknow: The Lucknow Municipal Corporation will impose fines on the spot on residents and shopkeepers found dumping garbage on roads or in open spaces instead of handing it over to door-to-door waste collection vehicles.The decision was announced during an awareness and public outreach campaign in Zone-8, where civic officials found instances of garbage being dumped along the G-20 Road-Cantonment route. Officials said regular door-to-door collection has been arranged on the route and people have been asked to use the service.Earlier, LMC officials used to issue challans and people had to submit fine later. But, now officials will be able to penalise on the spot. For the purpose, employees have been equipped with POS machines.Civic teams, along with representatives of Lion Enviro, the agency handling door-to-door waste collection, visited houses and shops and urged residents and shopkeepers to hand over their waste to designated collection vehicles.Shopkeepers were specifically asked to ensure that waste generated at their establishments was not left on roadsides or in public spaces.Zonal officer Ashish Singh said some residents and shopkeepers along the G-20 Road-Cantt route were still dumping waste in the open despite collection vehicles being available, leading to accumulation of garbage on the roadside. He said enforcement would follow against those continuing the practice.A similar awareness drive was conducted in Ibrahimpur-I ward, where municipal teams interacted with residents and shopkeepers and urged them to use the door-to-door collection system.Officials said the campaign was aimed at improving compliance with the waste collection system as well as preventing littering at public places.Zonal sanitary officer Jitendra Gandhi, other municipal officials, Lion Enviro workers and the IEC team participated in the drive.
