Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) here has initiated steps to implement a dedicated system for collection and disposal of green waste generated from parks and landscaped areas under its control.The development assumes significance as BDA manages some of the city’s largest and most prominent parks, where routine gardening activities generate substantial quantities of leaves, grass clippings, fallen branches, flower waste and more.Besides parks, the development authority is also responsible for maintaining landscaped stretches beneath several flyovers and along important road corridors, where regular pruning and upkeep create additional green waste.Over the past few years, BDA has expanded several public spaces, resulting in landscaped areas that require regular maintenance. “We have floated a tender to select the agency for managing the green waste from parks,” said vice-chairman (BDA) Chanchal Rana.Parks such as IG Park and Buddha Jayanti Park attract large crowds for morning walks, fitness activities and recreation, while Madhusudan Park and other neighbourhood parks have emerged as important public spaces in the capital city.Meanwhile, the landscaped zones under several flyovers, including the ones at Raj Mahal Square, Jaydev Vihar Square, Rasulgarh Square and CRPF Square, have also become a key component of Bhubaneswar’s urban beautification efforts.Officials said the move aims at ensuring systematic handling of waste generated from these parks. The proposed mechanism will cover collection, transportation and environmentally sound disposal of green waste from parks and gardens maintained by the authority.Sources said that a dedicated arrangement will improve cleanliness standards and help maintain the parks and landscaped zones. The system will also facilitate quicker clearance of debris generated during seasonal pruning drives.The authority has proposed strict monitoring of the agency’s performance, with emphasis on timely removal of waste, cleanliness of park premises and prompt response to special cleaning requirements.The selected agency would be engaged for a two-year period. BDA officials said the initiative is aimed at strengthening maintenance of public parks and ensuring that the city’s major recreational and landscaped spaces remain cleaner and visitor-friendly.
