Kolkata: The first big weather system formed over Bay of Bengal during this monsoon assumed the status of a depression on Sunday. While this system will cross the land through Odisha neighbouring coastal Bengal Met officials said parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, will continue to be impacted by this system till Monday afternoon by triggering rain, with some spells likely to be heavy.According to a special IMD bulletin Saturday’s well marked low pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of North Odisha-West Bengal coasts concentrated into a depression on Sunday. The system was about 50 km south-southeast of Balasore in Odisha, 60 km northeast of Chandbali (Odisha) and 60 km south-southwest of Digha.“The system is very likely to move west–northwestwards and cross north Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha close to Balasore during next 24 hours. It is very likely to continue to move further westnorthwestwards, across north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh during subsequent 24 hours,” said the bulletin issued on Sunday.Met officials said that this system has already reactivated the monsoon flow not only south Bengal regional but in larger part of India.Pockets of Kolkata encountered several spells of rain during the day though the spells were light to moderate. Alipore Met office recorded close to 7 mm of rain till the evening. Met officials have ruled out more spell till Monday afternoon.“This system will impact Odisha as it will be moving through Odisha over the land. But our coastal areas are also getting its impact in terms of rain. The impact in our region including Kolkata will be up to Monday afternoon,” said HR Biswas, head at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.Due to the spells of rain and partly cloudy sky the maximum temperature in the city plunged to the lowest in more than two weeks. Kolkata recorded 30°C on Sunday which was 2.5 notches below normal.
