Bhagalpur: Scientists at Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Bhagalpur, have secured a design registration patent from the Indian Patent Office for their ‘Dynamic GI (Geographical Indication) Flavour Profiling Traceability Device’.The innovation was developed by BAU’s Geographical Indication (GI) Facilitation Centre to align scientific advancement with GI protection, traceability systems and intellectual property generation. The team was headed by BAU vice chancellor D R Singh.Explaining the device, Singh said it combines advanced sensor technology, such as electronic noses, with machine learning to analyse the unique volatile organic compounds (aroma and flavour) of region-specific products. This process creates a chemical “fingerprint” of a GI product.The device maps volatile compounds in real time in relation to specific environmental conditions, including soil and climate, to ensure authenticity and traceability from farm to table. It also safeguards against counterfeiting by verifying a product’s origin and composition. Singh said the system can monitor quality parameters and help predict shelf life, thereby enhancing consumer trust.He added that the patent registration recognises the novel design and applied utility of the device, particularly in agricultural traceability, flavour profiling and quality authentication systems linked to GI products and value chains. The device is expected to protect the distinct identity of Bihar’s GI products, enhance their competitiveness in national and global markets, contribute to higher farmers’ income and promote sustainable agricultural development.The innovation is also likely to support standardised quality assessment, certification and branding of GI products, strengthening market integration and export readiness. It aligns with national priorities on GI protection, intellectual property creation and the promotion of region-specific agricultural produce.Director of research at BAU, A K Singh, said the development reinforces innovation in agricultural science and intellectual property generation, contributing to quality-led and market-oriented agricultural transformation in Bihar and beyond. He said it would enhance consumer confidence and willingness to pay a premium for authenticated, high-quality and locally sourced products.“The design has been registered jointly in the name of Bihar Agricultural University and the inventors — Aditya Sinha, Md Shamsher Ahmad, Abhijeet Ghatak, Mukesh Kumar Sinha, Shweta Shambhavi, Deepak Kumar Patel, Kirti, Ajay Kumar Sah, Anil Kumar Singh and Duniya Ram Singh — for their collective contribution to the innovation,” said BAU official Rajesh Kumar.
