K. Akshara was the most expensive player in the inaugural auction of the Kerala Basketball League (BKL) on Monday with the 14-year-old going to Thrissur Tuskers for ₹14 lakh.
Rexon Antony, another 14-year-old, was the most expensive player in the boys’ category with Kochi Stallions shelling out ₹11.25 lakh.
Jins K. Joby was the most expensive player in the under-19 boys’ category with Stallions spending ₹19.5 lakhs for his services while in the girls’ section K. Arthika topped the list with ₹9.5 lakh paid by Tuskers.
The auction was done with virtual money with players divided into three categories. Players in A+ category commanded a base price of one lakh while those in A had a base price of ₹75000 and in C the base price was ₹50,000.
The players for the auction pool were chosen from the one minute to hoop (OMH) skill test conducted all over Kerala. From 1150 players who registered for the test, around 723 were selected for trials, follwing which the auction pool was trimmed to 488.
The BLK will be held at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor stadium from June 4 to 14. Trivandrum Capitals, Calicut Warriors, Tuskers, Stallions, Kottayam Bisons and Alappuzha Dolphins are the six teams in the league.
