Kanpur: A wedding procession returning after the bride’s vidai was attacked in Rasulabad Kotwali area of Kanpur Dehat on Tuesday. The incident was initially reported as a robbery but police later found it to be a dispute over overtaking.Police said the wedding of 19-year-old Ranjana, daughter of one Rajesh of Kathika village, was held with Ankit (22), son of Anil of Thakur village in Auraiya district on Monday. After Vidai, the bride and groom were returning to their village by car. Ankit alleged that some youths from Kuntaliya village were following their vehicle on motorcycles. Near Bhawanpur village, they surrounded the car and assaulted the driver. When Ankit tried to intervene, they thrashed him too and snatched a gold ring, he said.Driver Iqbal alleged that some youths from the groom’s side were trying to assault him. When he went to file a complaint, the groom’s father and his brother tore up his written complaint, he alleged.A police team reached the spot and took one youth into custody.SI Shiv Bahadur said the dispute appeared to have started over overtaking, during which the driver was assaulted. Rasulabad Kotwali in-charge S N Singh said that the youths involved in the assault were relatives from the groom’s side.Police said one youth has been detained and further investigation is underway.
