Mumbai: A 36-year-old Bangladeshi woman, who was in police custody pending deportation, escaped from the premises of Kurla Police Station in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering an internal probe and a manhunt. The Kurla police as well the city crime branch are trying to trace the woman.According to the police, the incident took place on Thursday at 4.10 am. A constable, along with another woman officer, was assigned night duty to guard eight Bangladeshi nationals, including five women and three children, who were housed in vacant police quarters within the Kurla Police Colony.The woman, identified as Mirjan Begum alias Nasreen Ismail Sheikh, had reportedly sought permission to use the bathroom. However, when the officers checked after some time, she was found missing. Senior officers were immediately informed, following which CCTV footage of the vicinity was examined. The footage revealed that the woman exited the police compound near Chikne Chowk at 4.17 am. She was later seen walking with her husband, Manish Baldev Rajbhar alias Ismail Sheikh, near Bhabha Hospital, indicating that he had assisted in her escape.Police said the woman, originally from Narail district in Khulna division of Bangladesh, was residing in Mira-Bhayander and was undergoing deportation proceedings at the time of the incident. Officials suspect that she fled custody to evade deportation. The Kurla police have registered an offence against her husband for aiding the escape, while efforts are underway to trace the absconding woman. An inquiry has also been initiated to examine possible lapses in police custody.
