Balasore: A Bangladeshi national who served a 14-year prison sentence in connection with a dacoity case will be deported to Bangladesh on Wednesday after completion of all legal formalities, police said.The accused, identified as Md Babu Khan, 38, is a native of Hamirdi village under Bhanga police station in Faridpur district of Bangladesh.According to police, Khan illegally entered India in 2002 without a valid passport or visa, allegedly in search of work as a labourer. He later came to Balasore and got involved in several criminal cases, including multiple dacoities.Police records show that Khan was named in nine criminal cases registered at various police stations in Balasore district, including Town, Basta, Remuna, Sadar, Industrial Area, Khantapada and Sahadevkhunta police stations. Most cases were registered under Section 395 of Indian Penal Code for dacoity. He was also booked under the Foreigners Act for illegal entry into India and later under the NDPS Act in a separate case.Khan was arrested on May 27, 2007, and produced before the court as a foreign national. On Oct 19, 2012, the court of the ad hoc additional sessions Judge, FTC-II, Balasore, convicted him under Section 395 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 2,000. In default of payment of fine, he was directed to undergo an additional year’s rigorous imprisonment.Additional superintendent of police Niranjan Behera said Khan completed his prison term and was released from Balasore District Jail on April 8, 2026. However, instead of being released into the community, he was shifted to a temporary detention centre under police custody pending verification of his nationality and completion of deportation formalities.Behera said the Bangladesh deputy high commission in Kolkata completed Khan’s nationality verification and issued the required travel permit and exit permit, paving the way for his repatriation.With all legal and diplomatic formalities completed, Khan will be deported to Bangladesh on July 8 under police escort led by sub-inspector Alok Kumar Jena of Sahadevkhunta Model Police Station. He will be handed over to the Bangladeshi authorities at the India-Bangladesh border in accordance with established legal procedures, the officer said. kisansahu@gmail.com
