Varanasi: To mark National Handloom Day, Bharat Kala Bhavan at Banaras Hindu University hosted a special talk titled “From Threads to Finery” on Friday, celebrating the legacy and contemporary relevance of Banaras brocades.The session featured Kamaluddin Ansari, National and Sant Kabir Awardee, and young artist Mohammad Muzzammil, who highlighted the importance of handloom as a sustainable fashion alternative and vital carrier of India’s centuries-old textile heritage.The discussion focused on key challenges facing the traditional Banarasi saree industry, including competition from powerloom replicas, rising raw material costs, and the growing risk of young artisans leaving the craft due to urban migration.Prof. Sreerup Raychoudhuri, director of Bharat Kala Bhavan, said, “This talk underscores our commitment to artisan welfare. Our world-renowned textile collection serves as a vital bridge, inspiring contemporary weavers while safeguarding Banaras’s priceless heritage for future generations.”The speakers also emphasized the significance of historic Banarasi masterpieces preserved in the Bharat Kala Bhavan Textile Collection. These archives serve as important references for design, technique, and cultural authenticity, offering valuable inspiration to contemporary weavers and researchers working to preserve the integrity of the craft.Through such initiatives, Bharat Kala Bhavan continues to connect heritage with contemporary sustainability while supporting artisan livelihoods and encouraging dialogue on handloom preservation.
