Chandigarh: Punjab higher education and languages minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday called on the people to embrace the mother tongue, Punjabi, in their day-to-day lives, citing its crucial role in education, communication, cultural preservation and sustainable development.On International Mother Language Day, Bains said all languages were equally worthy of respect and reaffirmed the Punjab govt’s commitment to boost the Punjabi language and cultural roots.

Bains informed that the languages department organised 13 events across the state on International Mother Language Day. The celebrations included Kavi Durbars, drama performances, language seminars, speech competitions among students and literary discussions.Highlighting initiatives aimed at the preservation and global promotion of the mother tongue, Bains said to honour those who dedicated their lives to literature, the department provided a monthly pension/financial assistance of Rs 15,000 to needy writers, literati and their dependent families, besides conferring 10 awards across various categories under the ‘Best Literary Punjabi Book Award’ scheme for the year 2025.Furthermore, financial assistance was extended to 11 Punjabi literary societies to enable them to organise events dedicated to the propagation of the mother tongue, he added.MSID:: 128645692 413 |
