Gurgaon: In view of the “changing demands” of the job market, students in 250 PM SHRI govt schools across Haryana will soon get a 10-day bagless learning programme.The initiative — being rolled out during the 2026-27 academic session — will allow them to choose activities according to their interests and learn practical skills from local artisans and professionals.The programme is aimed at learning beyond textbooks and giving students exposure to traditional skills, local professions and vocational activities, officials said, adding it has been planned in line with National Education Policy.“Students will get an opportunity to understand different occupations through hands-on activities and interact with people working in different fields,” an official said.The programme will also involve industries, with students being exposed to industrial units, apprenticeships and vocational opportunities.Across 250 PM SHRI schools, 551 skill sectors have been identified for training. Of these, 14 sectors are already being covered, with 183 schools offering training in these areas. The remaining schools will gradually be brought under the programme.Under the plan, students of Class 6 will prepare three projects during the academic year, with the projects linked to activities and skills they observe and learn during the bagless days. Schools will organise activities both outdoors and indoors.Outdoor activities may include visits to nurseries, solar energy parks, biodiversity parks, training centres, panchayats, farms, industries, vegetable markets, railway stations, police stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and historical or cultural places.Students may also learn from local farmers, potters, carpenters and other artisans.Indoor sessions will include demonstrations and talks on areas such as soil and water conservation, animal husbandry, food processing, agriculture, handicrafts, pottery, carpentry, tailoring, weaving and other traditional skills.Officials said students will also be introduced to modern areas such as new technology and other emerging fields.A budget of Rs 9.3 crore has been approved for the programme in 250 PM SHRI schools.Of this, Rs 3.09 crore has been earmarked for transport, Rs 1.8 crore for food and other arrangements, while Rs 1.4 crore has been kept for educational and guidance-related activities.Another Rs 37.5 lakh has been allocated for tools, equipment and other requirements, while Rs 22 lakh has been set aside for printing and related material.The education department expects the initiative to help students identify their interests, understand different career options and develop skills that can complement their classroom education.
