Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal will contest from Nagaon seat for the October 6 bypolls. Counting will be on October 9. Ajmal, an MLA from Binnakandi assembly constituency, is looking to make a re-entry into the Lok Sabha after his defeat from the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in 2024.

Ajmal said, “The party wants to contest the by-election. I will file my nomination on Wednesday. I will get the votes of Muslims and Hindus. Congress has done nothing for Muslims. I will get not less than one lakh Hindu votes.” He said his opponent is from BJP.

“I have done a lot of work during the floods in Sibsagar. So Assamese people will vote for us,” he claimed.

Earlier, Ajmal had rejected the Congress party’s offer of jointly fighting the Nagaon seat.

By-election is being held as sitting MP from the Congress, Pradyut Bordoloi, resigned and left the Congress. He contested the assembly election in April this year from Dispur seat on a BJP ticket and won.
