Dibrugarh: Members of the Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) and Asomiya Mahila Mancha (AMM) took to the streets at Halwating in Amguri, Sivasagar district, on Tuesday, demanding police action within 10 days against drug peddlers, illicit liquor dealers and cattle smugglers allegedly operating freely in the region. The demonstration, led by AYM general secretary Akash Saikia, drew a significant number of protesters who raised slogans against what they described as the “complete failure” of local law enforcement to curb the growing menace of illegal activities plaguing the area.“Our youth are falling prey to drugs, and illegal liquor is destroying families. We have been witnessing rampant drug peddling, illegal liquor trade and cattle smuggling in our area for months now, but the police have turned a blind eye to these criminal activities. Our patience has run out, and we demand concrete action within the next 10 days,” Saikia said, adding that repeated appeals to authorities had gone unheeded during the protest. The agitators specifically flagged the Halwating-Tuli corridor as a major artery for cattle smuggling operations. While Halwating lies within Assam’s Sivasagar district, Tuli is situated in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district, making the interstate boundary a convenient escape route for smugglers seeking to evade law enforcement agencies on both sides.“The geographical advantage of this route, with one end in Assam and the other in Nagaland, has made it a haven for cattle smugglers who exploit the interstate border,” Saikia said.He added that authorities on both sides of the border failed to coordinate effectively to dismantle these smuggling networks, allowing criminal syndicates to operate with near-total impunity. The AYM issued a firm 10-day ultimatum to police authorities, demanding decisive and visible action against those involved in the illegal trade.
