Jaipur: Joint enforcement teams of the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) and Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) have begun removing encroachments from service roads along both sides of Mahal Road, ahead of the opening of four constructed U-turn bays on the corridor.Officials said the action was taken after JDA secretary Gaurav Saini’s order that the service lanes be made usable during a pre-meeting of the Traffic Control Board.The drive started after repolling for the civic elections ended Wednesday. JDA officials said encroachments had already been identified along the stretch, including street vendors operating from carts and a few permanent structures.“Teams are also reorganising parking outside food outlets and sweet shops located on both sides of the road to prevent spillover onto service lanes,” an official added.JDA has spent Rs 12 crore on the project to make the 7-km stretch between Jagatpura RoB and the Dravyavati River culvert signal-free. Seven U-turn bays have been built on Mahal Road; four are scheduled to open Monday.Once operational, the corresponding crossings will function without traffic signals. Motorists will no longer take direct right turns at these junctions; instead, they will move ahead, use the U-turn bay to reach the opposite carriageway, and then take a left turn.Traffic officials said the new bays have narrowed parts of the main carriageway, making clear and accessible service roads essential. These lanes may serve as alternate channels during congestion, diversions, or access movements.“The cleanup is aimed not only at removing illegal occupation but also at ensuring the redesigned road system functions smoothly when the bays open. Officials said monitoring will be needed to stop vendors and parked vehicles from returning to cleared sections once traffic patterns change,” stated a traffic official.
