Hyderabad: Aurobindo Pharma has made a strategic foray into biologics contract manufacturing with the inauguration of TheraNym Biologics, one of India’s largest dedicated biologics contract manufacturing organisations (CMO), at Borpatla village in Hatnoora mandal of Sangareddy district, marking a ₹1,200-crore investment aimed at expanding large-scale biologics production from the Hyderabad region.The TheraNym facility, located about 45 minutes from Hyderabad’s Financial District, is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs. It is equipped with 15 KL bioreactors, downstream processing suites, aseptic fill-finish capabilities and quality control laboratories.

IT and industries minister D Sridhar Babu, who inaugurated the facility along with Telangana science and technology minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, said Telangana is working to position Hyderabad as a major hub for advanced medical research and manufacturing, spanning biologics, vaccines, cell and gene therapies, and treatments for cancer and rare diseases.He said the govt is preparing a comprehensive roadmap to build a world-class ecosystem across the value chain, from research and development to commercial-scale manufacturing.

The minister pointed to initiatives including the new life sciences policy, One Bio Hub, Green Pharma City and the Life Sciences Hub as efforts to strengthen Hyderabad’s standing as a global biotechnology destination and expand the “Made in Telangana” brand. He also urged companies to partner with the govt on skill development to create an industry-ready workforce.According to Aurobindo Pharma, TheraNym is designed to meet international regulatory expectations and will manufacture advanced therapeutics for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, with exports planned to multiple markets including the United States, subject to approvals and customer requirements.Aurobindo Pharma vice chairman and managing director Nithyananda Reddy said building on the company’s aspirational foray into biosimilars with CuraTeQ, Aurobindo is now prioritising this high-growth segment as a core differentiator with the strategic addition of TheraNym Biologics for contract manufacturing.Aurobindo’s CEO for biologics and director Dr Satakarni Makkapati said TheraNym marks a defining moment in large-scale biologics manufacturing in India and is being positioned to cater to the supply chains of global pharma giants.Aurobindo said MSD will serve as TheraNym’s anchor customer, with the partnership intended to add capacity and capability to MSD’s supply chain for biologic medicines.MSD executive vice president and manufacturing division president Dr Dave Maraldo said TheraNym will add capacity and capability to MSD’s supply chain and will enable compliant and reliable supply of products for patients.Ahead of the inauguration, Aurobindo’s directors and MSD’s senior leadership met chief minister A Revanth Reddy to brief him about the project.
