Prayagraj: Allahabad University is witnessing a distinctly national footprint, with aspirants from 35 states and Union Territories registering for undergraduate admissions this year.According to AU PRO, Prof Jaya Kapoor, the diversity of applicants has increased significantly over the past few years. Besides students from western states such as Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, registrations have been received from far-flung northeastern states including Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Aspirants from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have also applied, while students from Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and even the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have shown interest in pursuing higher education at the Central University.The changing student profile has prompted the university to increase the number of courses taught in English medium in several departments over the past two to three years. Officials said students from different parts of the country contribute to a more diverse academic environment and reflect the efforts to improve teaching standards, recruit faculty members and strengthen academic infrastructure.The enthusiasm for admissions is evident from the application figures for the 2026-27 academic session. Against 3,698 seats in undergraduate and integrated programmes, the university has received 47,691 applications, while the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) has attracted 319 applications for 50 seats.Competition is expected to be intense across major programmes. The BA (as per New Education Policy) programme has received 14,378 applications for 1,995 seats, while BSc (Biology) has attracted 7,564 applications for 200 seats, translating to nearly 38 applicants per seat. BCom has received 6,432 applications for 300 seats, BSc (Mathematics) 5,136 applications for 450 seats, and BA LLB (Hons) 6,361 applications for 120 seats.Professional courses have also witnessed strong demand. BCA has received 2,519 applications for 80 seats, while applications have also poured in for programmes such as BFA, BA (Media Studies), Fashion Design and Technology and BPA. The university’s integrated courses in management, data science, environmental studies, family and community science, yoga and philosophy have also recorded multiple applicants for every available seat.With the registration process complete, the university is expected to announce the admission schedule and cut-off lists shortly.
