The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara, which had emerged as the centre of preparations over the past few days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the event, alongside several Union ministers, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from BJP-ruled states, senior NDA leaders and representatives from industry.

Ahead of the ceremony, Sarma had personally reviewed arrangements at the venue and directed officials to ensure that security, traffic management and logistical preparations were completed in time. Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota had also held review meetings with senior police and administrative officials to oversee preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit and the large gathering that was expected.
The ceremony follows a sweeping electoral victory for the BJP-led NDA at the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections. The alliance secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, reaffirming its dominance in the state. The BJP alone won 82 seats — the first time the party has crossed the majority mark on its own in Assam — while allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) secured 10 seats each.
The opposition was reduced to 24 seats, with the Congress winning 19 constituencies. Its ally Raijor Dal secured two seats, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Trinamool Congress managed two and one seats respectively.
The emphatic mandate further consolidated Sarma’s position as the BJP’s most influential leader in the Northeast. Since taking over as chief minister in 2021, Sarma has emerged as the party’s chief strategist in the region, combining aggressive political messaging with a governance-focused campaign centred on welfare delivery, infrastructure expansion and investment promotion.Political observers view the 2026 verdict as a validation of Sarma’s high-decibel and highly personalised style of politics. During the election campaign, he addressed hundreds of rallies across the state and remained the central face of the BJP’s outreach.
The BJP’s performance in Assam is also being seen as strategically significant for the party nationally, as it reinforces the NDA’s political hold over in the key northeastern state at a time when regional dynamics in several states remain fluid. Assam has increasingly become the BJP’s political and administrative hub in the region, with Sarma playing a key role in alliance management and electoral strategy beyond the state as well.
Soon after the election results, Sarma thanked voters for backing the NDA and said the verdict reflected public confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and the development agenda pursued by both the Centre and the state government.
Sarma formally submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya earlier this week, along with his council of ministers, paving the way for the formation of the new government. The governor accepted the resignation and asked Sarma to continue as caretaker chief minister until the new administration is sworn in.
The BJP Legislature Party and NDA Legislature Party met before the swearing-in ceremony to formally elect their leader. Sarma was widely expected to be unanimously chosen for another term.
Apart from the political significance, the swearing-in ceremony was sought to be projected as a showcase of the BJP’s organisational strength in the Northeast. Party leaders had expected a massive turnout at Khanapara, with pre-event estimates suggesting that over one lakh people could attend the event.
The new government will now face the challenge of sustaining economic momentum while addressing issues ranging from employment generation and flood management to ethnic balance and regional aspirations. The BJP leadership, however, sees the latest mandate as a sign that Assam’s electorate continues to back Sarma’s governance model and the NDA’s political narrative in the state.
