Dibrugarh: In a boost to higher education for women in the state, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated a state-of-the-art academic block at the Assam Women’s University (AWU) in Jorhat.The new facility, constructed at Rs 28.5 crore, is expected to enhance the learning environment for over 1,200 students enrolled at the institution.

Addressing a gathering at the Teok-Koliapani campus of the university, the CM emphasised the govt’s commitment to women-led development.“The inauguration of this new academic block is another step forward in empowering our ‘Nari Shakti’. The daughters of Assam will now have access to quality higher education within a conducive environment. We are confident that the new facility will attract more students and help in the holistic development of the women of Assam. This infrastructure will enable them to dream bigger and achieve more,” the CM said.The newly inaugurated complex is equipped with modern teaching-learning facilities, spacious classrooms and well-organised offices for faculty members and heads of departments. The university, established by the state legislature in 2013, holds the distinction of being the first state-run women’s university in the northeast. Spread across a sprawling 73-acre campus in Rowriah, it has been functioning since Sept 2014.Assam Women’s University, headed by Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar as the vice-chancellor, currently operates 17 departments offering 46 academic degree programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma levels. The institution was founded with the core objective of empowering women through education and promoting academic excellence.The ceremony was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Union minister of state for external affairs Pabitra Margherita, state education minister Ranoj Pegu, and state cultural affairs minister Bimal Borah.
