Guwahati: Robotic surgery is set to become accessible to the common public in Assam, marking a major leap in advanced healthcare services in the state’s public sector.The Assam govt on Tuesday signed an MoU with Global Health Limited, Medanta, to set up a Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), a significant step towards strengthening access to advanced surgical care in the state.“Robotic surgery is no longer a distant possibility for Assam. It is now taking shape at GMCH,” state health minister Ashok Singhal wrote on X.He said that the partnership will bring specialised training, capacity building, knowledge sharing, technical expertise and clinical escalation pathways to GMCH. Robotic procedures are expected to expand across multiple departments over the next six to 12 months, Singhal said.“Medanta will provide continued advisory support on emerging technologies and evidence-based practices, with joint outcome monitoring and quality assurance, helping position GMCH as a leading public-sector institution for robotic surgery,” Singhal wrote in his social media post.“Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. @himantabiswa, Assam is bringing tomorrow’s surgical capabilities closer to its people,” Singhal mentioned, lauding CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.The MoU was signed by Dr Siddharth Singh, Commissioner & Secretary, Medical Education and Research Department, for the Govt of Assam, and Biswajeet Deka, DGM, Marketing, for Medanta. Jayanta Kalita, AGM, Marketing, and Rohan Abraham, Northeast India Strategy, also represented Medanta.
