Guwahati: Assam Police destroyed large quantities of seized narcotics across multiple districts on Friday as part of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.The substances destroyed were seized over the past few years during Assam Police’s anti-drug operations and were disposed of through coordinated district-level exercises.In Udalguri district, police burnt 13,028.762 kg of cannabis valued at Rs 65,14,38,100 near Sonaripara village. Udalguri SSP Padmanabh Barua told the media, “These drugs were seized by officers from different police stations under the district within a span of one and a half to two years. The destruction was carried out only after the completion of the investigation and obtaining permission from the court.”Barua said the disposal drive was aimed at warning the public about the dangers of drugs. On enforcement in the district, he said in 2026 so far, 32 cases have been registered and around 3,000 kg of cannabis recovered. “Most drug detections are reported in Mazbat town, as it serves as an entry point for drugs arriving from the Arunachal Pradesh side. Other than that, detections also happen in Orang and Rowta town,” Barua added.In Dibrugarh district, drugs were destroyed at the AMCH biomedical waste treatment facility, including 271 grams of heroin and 77 kg of cannabis valued at Rs 1.4 crore in the international market. Assam Police IGP Akhilesh Kumar Singh said, “A total of 67 drug-related cases were registered in Dibrugarh, and 112 people were arrested in connection with these cases. The drugs were seized over a span of nine months.”In Golaghat district, police destroyed 875.14 grams of heroin valued at Rs 1,75,02,800, seized from Barpathar town during night hours in March, officials said. “This year, we have recovered approximately 2 kg of heroin, and more than 50 persons have been arrested.
