GUWAHATI: The death toll in floods in Assam has risen to 82 after two more fatalities were reported.The death toll seems to be increasing even as the overall flood situation improved with the number of affected people declining to 1.92 lakh, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).The ASDMA said one death was reported from the Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district, while the other occurred in Sonari in Charaideo district, news agency PTI reported.With the latest deaths, the flood toll this year has climbed to 82.No one has been reported missing, the authority said.Floodwaters continue to affect five districts, namely, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Charaideo, covering 17 revenue circles and 379 villages.According to the bulletin, 1,92,799 people remain affected, with Charaideo the worst-hit district at 77,456, followed by Sivasagar (63,492) and Jorhat (34,067).The situation has improved since Thursday, when more than two lakh people across eight districts were affected, PTI reported.A total of 54 relief camps are currently housing 12,994 displaced people, while 26 relief distribution centres are providing assistance to 5,384 people.Rescue and relief operations are continuing with the involvement of multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).The ASDMA said floodwaters continue to submerge around 15,430 hectares of cropland across the state.The bulletin also reported damage to houses, roads and other infrastructure in the affected districts.(With agency inputs)
