Dibrugarh: Assam DGP Harmeet Singh on Monday visited the Assam Police Commando Battalion camp at 10th Mile in Jagun, Tinsukia district, a day after the camp came under a pre-dawn rocket-propelled grenade attack by the banned Ulfa-I.Accompanied by Tinsukia SP Mayank Kumar, Singh inspected the camp and reviewed the security situation. He later chaired a high-level meeting with senior police and intelligence officials to coordinate ongoing counter-insurgency operations along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.Addressing reporters at the site, Singh said, “We will take action. Whatever legal action that we need to take will be taken. I want to say to those who have done it: what benefit such incidents will bring? It has not benefitted Assam or the Assamese people.”The DGP also gave an update on the four injured commandos — Chittaranjan Mili, Debashish Bora, Rabi Garh and Jimbush Marak — who were wounded in the 2.05am attack on Sunday.“I have visited the injured personnel at the hospital. Three of them have splinter injuries and they will undergo surgery after their swelling subsides. Another commando, who sustained burn injuries due to the RPG blasts, has been shifted to Guwahati for advanced treatment,” Singh said.Ulfa-I has named the attack “Operation Bujoni.” The strike involved multiple RPG rounds and automatic weapons fire. Security agencies also recovered unexploded under-barrel grenade launcher ammunition from the site, which was later destroyed in a controlled demolition by the Indian Army’s Red Shield Sappers. In a statement issued by its publicity wing, Ulfa-I claimed the attack was retaliatory, alleging that security forces had continued offensive operations despite the outfit’s self-imposed suspension of attacks on Assam Police after the 2021 elections.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the attack as “unfortunate” and said a joint operation by the Indian Army and Assam Police was underway. The attack has raised concern in the security establishment as Assam is set to go to the polls on April 9.
