Guwahati: An Assam Police constable allegedly died by suicide on Friday within the premises of the district jail in Dhemaji.According to police officials, the deceased constable has been identified as Palash Gogoi (34). He hailed from Lakhimpur district’s Ghilamara town and belonged to the 22nd Assam Police Battalion (APBN).Gogoi died by firing from his own service rifle and died on the spot, the officials said.Fellow personnel discovered him inside the jail compound, after which senior officers were informed and the authorities rushed to the scene. Dhemaji district’s senior superintendent of police Swapnaneel Deka said, “Gogoi was on duty at the jail when, without any warning, he shot himself with his own rifle.”He added that a case has been registered under unnatural death and the police will initiate a detailed investigation once the last rites are completed.
