Guwahati: Assam has commissioned its first govt-owned graphics processing unit (GPU) cluster, laying the foundation for deploying artificial intelligence (AI) across governance and public service delivery.A GPU cluster links powerful processors, capable of performing large-scale computations required to train and operate generative AI models and other data-intensive applications.“My vision is to build an AI-first Assam, where artificial intelligence becomes a force multiplier for better governance. We have now commissioned our first GPU cluster, creating secure, government-owned AI infrastructure that will power the next generation of public services,” CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said.Principal secretary (information technology) KS Gopinath Narayan said on X that the eight-node L40S GPU cluster was installed at the state data centre around two weeks ago and was already powering AI applications.“Our first L40S 8-Node GPU cluster landed in the State Data Centre hardly two weeks ago. We got our GPUs up and running and deployed open-source AI models covering two critical applications, while a third application is leveraging AI capabilities. Assam begins its journey towards becoming an AI-first state,” Narayan said.One application has been integrated with the government’s e-Office platform to help officials locate information in notifications, Acts and rules. The AI assistant searches official documents and provides relevant responses to support decision-making.“Our very first step was through our e-Office. If we want to refer to an important notification, an Act or a rule, we simply ask the AI assistant within e-Office. It searches our source base, retrieves the relevant information and powers the response,” Narayan said.He said all three applications were developed and deployed within a month.
