Guwahati: IPS officer Sudhanshu Dhama, originally from Arunachal Pradesh, has been selected for the prestigious Medal for Gallantry. Four officers from the northeast are also among the 92 awardees chosen for the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), while 29 personnel from the region are among the 664 selected for the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).Dhama, who earlier served as superintendent of police in West Kameng (Bomdila), Arunachal Pradesh, is currently posted as senior superintendent of police (SSP) at Ganderbal in Jammu & Kashmir.Congratulating him, Arunachal Pradesh deputy CM Chowna Mein wrote on social media: “I congratulate Sudhanshu Dhama, IPS, presently serving as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ganderbal, Jammu & Kashmir, on being conferred the Medal for Gallantry on the occasion of Independence Day 2026. This prestigious honour is a recognition of his exceptional courage, dedication and firm commitment to the call of duty.”Among the PSM awardees from the northeast are Assam Police inspector general Devojyoti Mukherjee, Mizoram additional director general of police Meenu Choudhary, Nagaland inspector general of police Videlalie Zashumo, and Manipur police sub-inspector Lokhendro Singh Arambam.For the MSM, 11 personnel are from Assam Police, six from Manipur Police, three from Meghalaya Police, two from Mizoram Police, five from Tripura Police, and one each from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.Ministry of home affairs announced the names of the awardees on Friday.The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded for an exceptional record of service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service recognises valuable service marked by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
